With the vision espoused by our founders 21 women, would come together to aid in the creation of the 147th chapter, of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Originally, known as the Alpha Kappa Alpha Club, the Zeta Gamma Omega graduate chapter was established on March 28, 1953 in Prairie View, Texas. Twenty-one women comprised the initial interest group; of these, thirteen would become charter members of this new chapter. The charter members are Sorors Joan Brooks, Elizabeth E. Calloway, Francille Briggs Hardemon, Gwendolyn B. Jones, Kathryn N. Jordan, Doris M. King, Lorraine O’Banion, Helen Pierson, Clemmie Saxton, Maggie Swisher, Iris B. Thomas, Ella C. Weaver and Eloise Williams. The charter for Zeta Gamma Omega, was signed by the 13th President Soror Laura T. Lovelace, Soror Laura Cook, Secretary, and Soror Eugenia Long, Regional Director. Soror Connie Yerwood of Beta Psi Omega in Austin, Texas charged and installed the first elected officers. To date, Zeta Gamma Omega is proud to have a flourishing membership of dozens of vibrant women that help in servicing the city of Prairie View and surrounding towns of Hempstead and Waller.
